‘A Hand to Hold’- A Comprehensive
Intervention for the protection and fulfillment
of the rights of the children in the Post
COVID scenario in rural Nagaland, project is
being implemented in the districts of Peren,
Phek, Kiphire and Wokha covering 4
educational institutions and 8 communities.
The project was conceptualized as an
intervention to address the socio-economic
and educational distress experienced by the
people, especially the children due the spread
of COVID-19 and the lockdown measures
during the past 2 years.
The project is in the initial stage of mobilizing and sensitizing the community along with laying foundations for comprehensive interventions for addressing the needs of the children in the families experiencing economic distress. The project has completed advocacy workshops in 8 targeted communities and has sensitized over 500 persons on the need for child centred approach in addressing key issues. 160 poor performing children were identified and remedial learning programmes have been initiated. 40 economically backward children have been identified and supported with scholarships. Focused training programmes have been conducted with 470 children on life skills, sexual and reproductive health and substance abuse.
The remedial learning programme was organized in 8 sections covering 160 children in the targeted locations.
During the home visits, the overall welfare of the child and the environment was assessed in collaboration with the immediate family members and relatives.
The training programmes on life skills and career education was carried out for children in the targeted villages with the objective to enhance their understanding and practice of life skills and leadership skills along with the providing information on how to select their vocation and prepare them for future.
The activity groups were formed as a tool to identify children who are in urgent need of support and are in extremely vulnerable situations. The groups activity included short input sessions on various local issues and games, sports, entertainment activities and art and craft competitions.
This is a key strategy of the project to enhance the knowledge and attitude of the community on child rights. The events involved input sessions by the resource persons on the key topic, interactive sessions and focus group discussions.
Child rights champions are identified from each village as a project strategy to identify and train a child right activist in each community to coordinate and monitor the child rights initiatives as well as to report child right abuse incidents to the concerned stakeholders in time.
